Quick answers

How do you calculate a tip on a restaurant bill?

Multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage as a decimal. For a $80 bill at 20% tip: 80 × 0.20 = $16. Add that to the bill for the total ($96). The calculator above does this automatically and lets you choose whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Etiquette varies. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is more common in the US and saves a little money; tipping on the post-tax total is slightly more generous and is the norm in some regions. The calculator defaults to pre-tax but lets you switch.

How do I split a bill unevenly when people ordered different things?

Switch the calculator to "Split unevenly" and enter each person's pre-tax subtotal. The tool distributes the tip and tax proportionally so each person pays exactly their share. If you need to track this across multiple meals or a whole trip, use DoSplit — it logs every expense and figures out who owes whom.

Is this calculator really free?

Yes. No signup, no ads, no email required. If you find yourself splitting expenses with the same group regularly (roommates, trips, recurring dinners), DoSplit itself is also free and handles the longer-running case.

Does the calculator work on mobile?

Yes. The page is mobile-first — numeric keyboards open automatically on the bill, tip, and tax fields. You can use it at the table without signing in or installing anything.
